Ultimate Sri Lanka in Winter - 15 days / 14 nights

This private tour proposes 15 days packed with cultural, panoramic and fun highlights. It will take you through the most important aspects of Sri Lanka, from the ancient cities of the cultural triangle, to the tea plantations country, 2 national parks and the southwest coast. Along the road, you will have the opportunity to see a few of Unesco World Heritage Sites. The main features of this tour are the climbing of Sigiriya rock fortress which will unveil beautiful sites and panoramas, a safari in the Minneriya national park, the visit of Kandy and its Temple of the Tooth Relic, the visit of a Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya, a train ride to Ella, safaris in Yala & Horton Plain national parks and finally have some time to relax on the superb southwest coast in the Koggala region where you will be able to watch whales.

Day 1: Arrival / Negombo

You will be met by your private chauffeur-guide upon your arrival at Colombo Bandaranayake International Airport.

Departure to Negombo.

Rest of the day at leisure to catch up from the lengthy flight. 

Overnight stay at the Jetwing Blue 

Day 2: Negombo / Pinnawala / Sigiriya

In the morning, city tour of Negombo which is at the heart of the local fishing industry. You will visit the Negombo lagoon and fish auction market.

Departure to Pinnawala
Visit the elephant orphanage and see how the baby elephants are cared and fed. Attend to the daily bath of the herd of elephants.

Departure to Sigiriya

Day 3: Sigiriya / Hiriwaduna / Sigiriya

Departure to Sigiriya

Visit of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The cultural aspects as well as the breathtaking views make this excursion a must.

Thereafter, you will be able to trek near Sigiriya and explore the village of Hiriwaduna. Bullock cart ride, cross a river in a typical boat and enjoy a cup of ginger tea with a local family.

Day 4: Sigiriya / Polonnaruwa / Minneriya / Sigiriya

In the morning, you will drive to the second capital of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa and have the chance to visit the ruins of the Royal Palace by bike and see Buddha in different postures. The city is vast and points of interest many.

In the afternoon, you will take part to a 4x4 safari in the Minneriya National Park (or Kaudulla or Eco National Park) which hosts wild elephants, about 160 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and butterflies. The park is famous for its wet land and its bamboo trees. You will be able to see the elephants closely. Not too closely!

Day 5: Sigiriya / Dambulla / Matale / Kandy

The day will start with another Unesco World Heritage Site, Dambulla. The Dambulla rock hosts famous cave temples. It is a complex featuring 5 caves with Buddha colorfully painted on walls. The 600 feet height of the Dambulla rock enable stunning views of the surrounding.

En route to Kandy, you will then have the opportunity to visit a spice garden in Matale. You will be shown the different spices Sri Lanka is well-known for and informed on how they are cultivated and processed.

After lunch, you will arrive in Kandy another stunning Unesco World Heritage Site built around a beautiful lake.

Afternoon at leisure

Overnight stay at the Amaya Hills.

Day 6: Kandy / Peradeniya / Kandy

Departure to Peradeniya.

You will visit the 147 acres Peradeniya Botanical Garden which is famous for its collection of superb orchids and its amount of species of plants.

You will then drive back to Kandy and visit the town, its bazaar, a gem museum and of course in the evening the very important temple of the Tooth Relic where one of Buddha’s tooth is preserved. Thereafter you will attend a cultural show featuring typical Sri Lankan dancing.

Day 7: Kandy / Kitulgala / Nuwara Eliya

Departure to Kitulgala.

White water rafting expedition on a the Kelani river where the "Bridge on the River Kwai" was filmed.

In the afternoon, drive in the direction of Nuwara Eliya. You will have the opportunity to visit a tea plantation and factory. You will be shown how tea is cultivated and processed. You will of course be able to have a cup of the famous pure Ceylon tea!

Visit the city of Nuwara Eliya which was called "little England".

Overnight stay at St Andrews.

Day 8: Nuwara Eliya / Horton Plains / Ella

Early departure to Horton Plains.

Horton Plains is the only national park situated in the hills region. You will visit the park by foot (3 hours) and be amazed by the landscapes and the wildlife. With a bit of luck you will be able to spot some rare birds. Visit includes World's End & Baker's Fall.

In the afternoon, continue to Ella.

Afternoon free to visit the village of Ella and its surrounding hills and tea plantations.

Overnight stay at 98 Acres Resort.

Day 9: Ella / Yala

Departure to Yala National Park

The 3-hours trip is on a beautiful scenic road will surely show you the best of this moutainous area.

In the afternoon, 4x4 safari in the national park, home of elephants, bears, buffalos, rare birds and crocodiles...

Overnight stay at the Cinnamon Wild.

Day 10: Yala / Koggala

Departure to Koggala.

Check-in at your hotel

Rest of the afternoon free to check out the beach and the local stilt fishermen.

Day 11: Koggala

Full day at leisure on the beach. Snorkeling available at cost.

Day 12: Koggala

Departure to Galle (5 minutes away)

Visit of the city with its fort, harbor, fortifications and colonial houses.

Return to the hotel & rest of the day at leisure.

Day 13: Koggala / Mirissa / Koggala

Departure to Mirissa (30 minutes)

Enjoy a whale & dolphin watching cruise along the Mirissa coast.
Blue whales, sperm whales, occasional orcas and dolphins are regularly spotted along this coast. Best time of the year to observe whales is between December to April.

Return to the hotel & rest of the day at leisure.

Day 14: Koggala / Kosgoda / Mount Lavinia

Departure to Mount Lavinia

Enroute stop at the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka.

Departure to Colombo

Short visit of the capital of Sri Lanka with the fort, the lighthouse, a hindhu temple, the residential and Pettah area, the parliament...

Overnight stay at The Mount Lavinia. 

Day 15: Mount Lavinia / Colombo Airport

Check-out and final transfer to the Colombo Airport.
